The Weekly Checklist

1. Skim the surface

Run your skimmer across the water's surface to remove leaves, bugs, and debris before they sink and break down. This takes two minutes and prevents the biggest source of pool staining.

2. Brush the walls and floor

Brush the walls, steps, corners, and tile line. Brushing loosens algae and biofilm that chemicals can't reach on their own — especially important on Houston pools that see lots of sun.

3. Vacuum

Vacuum the floor weekly, or run your automatic cleaner. Debris that sits on the floor feeds algae and can stain plaster over time.

4. Empty the baskets

Clean the skimmer baskets and pump basket. A full basket restricts water flow, strains your pump, and wastes energy.

5. Test the water chemistry

Test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and cyanuric acid. Houston's water and heat change chemistry fast — weekly testing catches problems before they become green-water disasters.

6. Check the equipment

Give your pump, filter, and valves a quick visual check. Listen for unusual noises and look for leaks. Catching small problems early saves hundreds in repairs.

7. Shock when needed
